What did you want to be when you grew up?

Here is a #throwbackthursday just about as far back as I can go in my design career. Unfortunately I have lost the notebook containing the first house I ever designed when I was in 2nd grade.

As far back as I can remember however I have wanted to be an Interior Designer. I was a bit of a nerd in school and even attended summer academy for fun. This project is from a drafting class I took one summer in junior high. We had 2 weeks to design and draft a house, and we even got to make blueprints (back when they were made using a stinky ammonia-smelling machine, and were actually blue).

The house I designed was a 5 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 story house. This was unintentional to a degree, but coming from a family with 4 kids, it was not strange to me that a house should be that large. Unfortunately I don't still have the blueprints, but I could probably sketch out a reasonably similar version of this house today.

Although the class itself didn't focus on interiors, because it was summer, I had some spare time and I created this brochure highlighting the proposed interior color scheme and furniture ideas for the house. The furniture is mostly from the JCPenny home catalog, and I found fabric samples at a local store.

Note, the heavy use of pine, forest green, and pink (but not mauve) carpet. Obviously, this design is very dated, and a lesson on following design trends too closely, but it's fun to see what I thought my future career would entail.

What about you? Do you have any early examples of what you thought your future career would be? Photos of you dressing up as a doctor for Halloween, or being the #1 cookie seller for your school fundraiser? Share them below.
